THE TERME (THE THERMAL BATHS)

Val d’Orcia and Valdichiana has few rivers and many baths for its territory the two zones are joined to the waters that have always offered to the man optimal conditions for the life.

Via Francigena unfastens its routes to touch upon the boiling bath of Bagno Vignoni and the "rocks" of limestone of Bagni San Filippo: the location is already visited by many different visitors and a inifinite multitude of pilgrims. Every zone has however a direct relationship with the thermal baths. Recovered traces of ancient baths have been retrieved from various locations such as San Casciano dei Bagni and, naturally, Chianciano. Evidence suggests that significant artefacts which have been recovered belong to a thermal building of roman age and from a Etruscan temple dedicated to the God of "healthy waters", which today is conserved in the archaeological museum in the city.

After the fall of the roman empire, during the height of the Middle Ages, the interest towards the thermal baths diminish, only to return in XIV the century and to remain alive and unchanged in time, as they demonstrate the numerous structures which have born around baths. The same Fellini has planted trees around the baths, built lodges, parks, created a place to have fun which surrounds the running waters of dell’Acqua Santa e di Sant’Elena, making Chianciano Baths unforgettable.

Only 3kms away from Chianciano, in the fraction of Sant' Albino we find the Thermal bath of Montepulciano, the forefront in the search and the application of the thermal cures. Moving into the Valdichiana we find sulphureous waters of Rapolano and finally the gigantic thermal swimming pool of Sarteano.
